Laos – After years of war and isolation, Southeast Asia’s most pristine environment, intact cultures and quite possibly the most chilled-out people on earth mean destination Laos is fast earning cult status among travellers. It is developing quickly but still has much of the tradition that has sadly disappeared elsewhere in the region. Village life is refreshingly simple and even in Vientiane it’s hard to believe this sort of languid riverfront life

Pakse in Laos was founded by the French in 1905 as an administrative outpost and still has a very French old world charm about it. It sits on the confluence of the Mekong and Don (Se Don) rivers, and is a great place to relax before exploring southern Laos.

One icon you won’t miss in town is the wedding cake like Champasak Palace Hotel, built in 1968 by the last prince of Champasak (Chao Boun Oum na Champasak). He was also prime minister of the Kingdom of Laos from 1960 to 1962.

The prince, a royalist and aligned with Thailand, fled to France in 1974 with the rise of the Pathet Lao. But before the Hotel, spend your morning at Wat Luang, a Buddhist monk school, where you can see an uncrowded morning Tak Bat, or alms giving ceremony!
