Kampot, the city which still retains many French architectures, is situated in the south of Cambodia, about 2 hours travelling by bus from Sihanoukville.
Kampot is famous for spectacular Bokor mountain 1080m above sea level and the French palaces, abandoned church hidden in the mysterious fog. Ways of travelling to Kampot
#1. Ho Chi Minh city- HaTien- Kampot
The best way is to go through the border gate of Ha Tien. From Ho Chi Minh City, you travel by Kumho car departing at 9pm or 10pm for Ha Tien (180k / one way ticket), with Kumho car transshipment to the border gate. After completing customs formalities, you can catch 16 seat car to Kampot with ticket price of $10. The total time of travelling by car is as follows:
HCMC – Ha Tien (8 hours, you buy tickets of Kumho carmaker) + customs procedures (30 minutes, self- carry out) + Border gate- Kampot (1 to 1.5 hours, PVV car picks your up).
#2. Ho Chi Minh City – Phnom Penh – Kampot
From Ho Chi Minh City, you catch car to Phnom Penh (ticket prices range from 160,000 to 230,000 depending on car provider) (in 5-6 hours), then take Soyra bus from Phnom Penh to Kampot firms ($ 4/ ticket, traveling in 3 hours).
Currently, HCMC- Phnom Penh night car is available; however, you have to sleep in the car and wait until the time Moc Bai border gate works, then carry out the procedures
Tourist attractions
#1. Kampot river
Kampot is famous for river Kampot flowing through the center of town with the rickety steel bridges crossing. When purple dusk begins to fall combined with images of blue fishing boats preparing to sail for fishing, the setting becomes even more romantic and indescribably poetic. Once visiting Kampot, you must go to this lazy river and enjoy the peaceful space here.
#2. Bokor Plateau
Bokor plateau is located on an altitude of 1080m above sea level. It has a cool climate and is covered by cloud all year round. Bokor has an excellent location to watch Kep sea, Kampot and Phu Quoc in Vietnam. It is one of the prominent tourist destinations of Kampot in Cambodia that visitors should not ignore.
Besides pleasant atmosphere, Bokor has many exciting activities such as admiring the ancient structures hidden in the fog, the villas built to relax by King Sihanouk, visiting the famous Wat Samprov Pram (The 5 boats temple), or visiting the national park to observe wild animals.
#3. Phnom Chhngok Cave
In Kampot, there are several limestone caves, in which the most especial one is Phnom Chhngok cave. The cave is quite special, small and still unexploited for tourist services, inside the cave, there is an ancient shrine. When climbing the cave, visitors will see beautiful natural panorama of a peaceful countryside.
#4. Pepper, durian gardens
Pepper and durian are the specialties of Kampot region and are famous throughout the country. On the road from Kampot to Kep, you will encounter Kampot pepper and durian gardens. Kampot pepper is very aromatic, pungent, used to make extremely delicious dishes. Kampot durian has thick segments, delicious but not too sweet taste. Coming to pepper and durian gardens, you can buy the product as a gift for friends and relatives to support local people.
#5. Kampot market
On the way to the coastal city of Sihanouk, you can visit the famous Kampot Market. The market is full of booths, items are mixed together, but the most prominent ones are still fragrant durians.
