Hai Duong Province Travel Guide for Backpackers

Hai Duong province attracts visitors with hundreds of cultural and historical monuments and thousands of stories of military, literature celebrities and famous physicians like Tran Hung Dao, Nguyen Trai, Chu Van An, Tue Tinh….


This part only focuses on the movements departing from Hanoi, if you are in the Central and Southern provinces, you can select this place to start. Particularly, tourists in the North can refer in provincial bus stations.

#1. By public transport

The bus Luong Yen – Hai Duong province at Luong Yen bus station departs every 15 minutes, the price is 40,000/ ticket. Once arriving to Hai Duong, you can catch taxi or motorbike taxi to travel to the tourist attractions.

Visitors can also choose the form of travelling by passenger car from My Dinh, Gia Lam… bus stations. The ticket prices range from 50,000 VND to 70,000 VND depending on the starting point and carmaker.

Additionally, the train Hanoi- Hai Phong also runs through Hai Duong, you can get on the train at Gia Lam station and get off at Phu Thai station (Kim Thanh district), the ticket is between 40,000 VND and 50,000 VND depending on the quality and convenience (hard or soft seat, air-conditioned or not).

#2. By personal vehicles

Hai Duong is 57 km from Hanoi, so you can easily travel to Hai Duong by motorbike or private car.

You should note that when travelling by personal vehicles, remember to bring all of the legal papers of the vehicle, your  driving license and strictly follow the rules of road traffic safety. You should also wear glasses to avoid sunlight and dust, and cellphone equipped with Google map application to find the road easily.

Hai Duong province center area includes the following routes: Nguyen Luong Bang, Nguyen Thi Due, Dien Bien Phu, … You can base on this route to rent a hotel where is convenient to stay in move. Remember book a room before arrival.

Hai Duong Specialties

Referring to the specialties of Hai Duong province, visitors will immediately mention Hai Duong province green bean cake, Ninh Giang town Gai cake- glutinous rice cake dyed black in a concoction of leaves (Ninh Giang district), Lam Thuy lychee (Thanh Son commune, Thanh Ha), Phu Tai orange, Dong areca , Kinh Mon garlic….

Green bean cake has been a renowned traditional specialty of Hai Duong province from the early twentieth century. Green bean cake is made from pureed bean with sugar, cooking oil, lard. Then it is pressed into the square blocks and cut into the small cube or circle cakes. The cake has a bright yellow color, is smooth and aromatic.

Thanh Ha litchi is originated from China and the seed was planted in Hai Duong by Mr. Hoang Van Com living in Lam Thuy village, Thanh Son commune, Thanh Ha district. Favoured by the nature, the soil in Thanh Ha is very fertile; therefore, Thanh Ha litchi is so especially delicious, and is the famous unique product in the northern region. Currently, Thanh Ha litchi has been replicated in Luc Ngan – Bac Giang, Chi Linh – Hai Duong province and many other locations throughout the country.

Added to this, coming to Hai Duong province, you will also be invited to enjoy Dày cake (made of sticky rice and cooked green bean) served with sausages in Gia Loc, glutinous rice in Kim Thanh, custard- apple and red sweet banana in Chi Linh, Ke Sat – Binh Giang dry pancake… people by local people.

Best time to visit Hai Duong

Hai Duong climate changes so markedly from season to season, but the most beautiful the most appropriate time to visit this land is in autumn. Particularly, the summer in Hai Duong is sunny and hot, but in return, you can pick up and enjoy the freshest and the most delicious litchis.
