One Day Exploring Hoa Lu Ancient Capital

Located 100km from  the capital of Hanoi to the south, the ancient capital of Hoa Lu (Ninh Binh), Truong Yen Commune, Hoa Lu District, Ninh Binh Province is the particularly important national historical, cultural relic. This is also the first capital of the state of feudal centralization in Vietnam with historical marks: unifying the country, defeating Tong – Chiem enemies and rising up the process of moving the capital to Hanoi. In 1010, King Ly Thai To moved the capital from Hoa Lu to Thang Long, Hanoi. Later, although the reigns of King Ly, Tran, Le and Nguyen was no longer in the capital of Hoa Lu anymore, the kings still focused on remodeling and building many buildings such as temples, tombs, temples, pagodas, palaces…

Hoa Lu Ancient Citadel

Hoa Lu is favored with beautiful scenery with rolling mountains by the nature. It is ideal to spend a full day to visit, learn about the culture and the people here.

8am: Departing from Hanoi, you wastes just over an hour going along the highway to Hoa Lu – Ninh Binh, the ancient capital where Dinh Bo Linh defeated 12 forces of enemy.

According to historical documents, in 968, after finishing his pacification, Dinh Bo Linh became the emperor and established the first centralized feudal state in Vietnam and chose Hoa Lu the capital. Hoa Lu ancient capital was associated with careers of three dynasties of Dinh – Le – Ly; therefore, this land is considered the “sacred land” with many famous celebrities of Vietnam.

9:30am: Visiting King Dinh, Kinh Le Temple

After parking, buying  tickets, you can visit Hoa Lu ancient capital complex. King Dinh and King Le Temple is located on Truong Yen Commune, Hoa Lu district. King Dinh Temple is located on the campus of 5ha, under the special protection area of the ruins. It was built in form of “nội công ngoại quốc” (internal shape looks like Chinese character “cong” 工, and external shape looks like character “quốc”国), facing the east. In front of the temple is Ma Yen mountain whose shape is like a house saddle. The tomb of King Dinh is in the mountain. Here, you can learn about the history of the reigns of King Dinh and King Le.

You can also experience as “shepherds” when riding a buffalo, wearing a leaf hat, holding a bamboo stick leisurely strolling through immense rice fields.

11:30am: Visiting Tam Coc- Bich Dong

 It takes about 25 minutes to travel by car from Hoa Lu to the tourist resort of Tam Coc – Bich Dong. You can eat in the restaurant along the road or book a meal in Tam Coc, where has many restaurants and convenient services.

You should not ignore the specialties including burnt rice and mountain- raised goat meat of this land. Burned tasty rice dish must be served with delicious sauce made from beef or pig’s heart, kidney fried with onions, mushrooms, carrots and tomato making a viscous sauce with fragrant lard and onion smell.
